  • Final Fantasy 14 on Xbox has a new currency called FFXIV Coins
  • This new currency is spreading confusion across the fan base
  • FFXIV Coins appear to exist so Xbox can take its cut

After over a decade of waiting, Final Fantasy 14 is now available on Xbox consoles. To facilitate the new port, the popular MMO has made buying anything on the new version an infuriating experience with the arrival of FFXIV Coins.

A brand-new premium currency, FFXIV Coins have been introduced to buy subscriptions and items within the MMORPG. This currency has been purposefully created to deal with specific fees on the Xbox Store, and its existence is infuriating and confusing fans everywhere.

FFXIV Coins can be purchased from the Microsoft Store in multiple values. After buying the coins, you’ll have to add them to your account by logging into the game. To buy anything on the Xbox version of Final Fantasy 14, you need to use the new currency, but not on any other platform.

“It's so funny that we've been begging SE to make account management and billing more simplified for 10 years and instead of doing that they made it even more complicated for no reason,” one popular tweet reads.

The existence of the new premium currency has resulted in confusion spreading across the fan base. A post on the official Square Enix forums saw multiple fans explain their confusion, wondering where the barrier ends for FFXIV Coins.

At the time of writing, it seems that expansions (which are platform exclusive) need to be purchased with FFXIV Coins. However, the game’s subscription fee should be able to be purchased on the Square Enix website, allowing you to play on whatever platform you like.

“I guess I just would like to avoid using the coins if possible. I have a feeling you will only be able to buy them in certain increments which leads to having to buy more than you need each month when you could just pay the flat sub fee on any other platform,” said one fan.

Final Fantasy XIV is currently available in open beta on Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles, and it’s a damn-near perfect port. While the existence of a proprietary currency just for Xbox users is annoying, it’s nothing game breaking for newcomers on the platform coming to the game.
