A huge remake of BioWare’s classic Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is currently facing a troubled development, but IP holder Disney is now aware of fans’ demand for the game’s remake.
Revealed back in 2021, Knights of the Old Republic Remake was initially developed by Aspyr before being moved to another studio. However, recent reports claim that the game is no longer being worked on.
Speaking to Axios, Disney’s head of gaming, Sean Shoptaw revealed that the company is aware of the large “demand” for the KOTOR remake to be released. However, they didn’t explain whether the game was still in development.
“Not a lot I can say on that point for some hopefully obvious reasons, but KOTOR is obviously an incredibly popular game,” Shoptaw explained. “One that we are incredibly proud of and think that there’s still a lot of demand for.”
Despite reports that the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake is no longer being worked on, workers at Saber Interactive claim that devs are still developing the game. However, executives at publisher Embracer Group will no longer discuss the remake at all.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic helped to define the western role-playing game genre when it released in 2001. Alongside the likes of Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind, the game was a huge step forward for the west’s development of RPGs.
The game was quickly followed up by Obsidian’s Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II as well as a still-ongoing MMO dubbed just Star Wars: The Old Republic. Since then, Disney’s acquisition made the universe of KOTOR non-canon, delegating it as part of the Legends timeline, but fans still hope for more of the series.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake was revealed as a PlayStation exclusive for PS5 consoles. If the game ever does release, it will likely stay as an exclusive release on PlayStation devices and PC.
