Want to know how to fight Mewtwo in Pokemon Stadium? Mewtwo is one of the most powerful Pokemon in existence, and it's one of the classic fights in the game. With Pokemon Stadium's release to Nintendo Switch Online, you may be wanting to know how to experience the iconic moment of the 90s video game release.

There's a few things to do in order to be able to get to fight Mewtwo, and given that it's the primary boss fight you'll want to aim for, you'll want to also know what Pokemon you'll want to bring to be able to take on this powerful foe.

How to fight Mewtwo in Pokemon Stadium

If you want to fight Mewtwo in Pokemon Stadium, you're in for a journey. It's not a complicated process, but one that is rather lengthy.

You'll need to beat each cup as well as the Gym Leader Castle. Once you manage that already impressive feat, you'll see Mewtwo's silhouette appear in the main Pokemon Stadium area. Move your cursor over it to challenge the legendary Pokemon.

This fight is difficult in both difficulties, but what's nice is that you'll have the ability to bring a six-Pokemon team to the fight. Here is Mewtwo's moveset for both rounds.

Round 1

  • Psychic
  • Rest
  • Thunderbolt
  • Blizzard

Round 2

  • Psychic
  • Rest
  • Thunderbolt
  • Amnesia

Beat it, and you'll unlock Round 2 - a second version of the game that's even harder than the first. Complete that grueling mission and you'll fight Round 2 Mewtwo as well - a much harder battle than the first. Both Round 1 and Round 2 Mewtwo fights can be repeated at will.

Best Pokemon to fight Mewtwo in Pokemon Stadium

As we mentioned earlier, you'll be able to bring a six-Pokemon team with you to this fight. It's a single battle, with all Pokemon being allowed. Pokemon you bring should be level 100, so grab the best Prime Cup Rentals.

Mewtwo is a psychic type, which in generation one is only weak to Bug and Ghost type moves. Unfortunately in generation one, the bug moves and Pokemon are very underwhelming, and the Ghost type aren't great, either.

Here's some Pokemon that we'd recommend as a team to bring against Mewtwo.

  • Articuno
  • Gengar
  • Exeggutor
  • Charizard
  • Mew
  • Clefable
  • Magneton

Each of these Pokemon are generally strong, but what's nice is that most of the rental versions have a status move to make Mewtwo weaker. For example, Exeggutor has Sleep Powder, Gengar has Hypnosis, and so on.

Articuno is a very interesting one, as it has Ice Beam, which has a small chance to freeze Mewtwo. Frozen Pokemon in generation one can't thaw out unless they are hit with a fire move that can burn (all moves except Fire Spin). This should give you a pretty free win. It's only about a 10% chance to freeze, but it's worth trying to go for it for an easy fight.

Another consideration for these Pokemon as well is that they have higher Special stats. In generation one, Special Attack and Defense are the same stat, so having a higher special stat will help resist the high special of Mewtwo.
