We've got everything you could ever need to conquer Lords of the Fallen in our dedicated walkthrough hub! It covers essentials like how to heal and level up your character, as well as how to kick the first boss' backside!

What is withering?

In Lords of the Fallen, withering refers to your health being depleted and changed from a red state to a grey state. When you trigger withering, it will reduce some of your health and replace it with a grey bar of health instead. The grey bar does not represent your actual health, and you'll die if you take enough damage to deplete the red bar.

Withering is caused by performing certain actions with the Umbral Lamp. The Umbral Lamp is used to traverse between the dual worlds, Axiom and Umbral, and entering the Umbral realm causes withering. You also get withered health if you're blocking attacks. So, you can't just indefinitely block attacks without losing HP.

How to heal withering

There are two main methods to recover from the withered status and restore your grey health.

  • You can attack enemies, and every hit you land will restore your withered health back up. However, if you get hit while you have withered health, you will lose all of your grey bar.
  • You can actually siphon your grey health from enemies by pointing your lamp towards them. Your lamp will slowly siphon the enemies in your Umbral Lamp's AoE and restore your grey health.

Withering is clearly meant to promote a more aggressive style of play similar to Bloodborne. You can choose the aggressive option for the high-risk high-reward or choose the slower and safer Umbral Lamp option for a slow regain of grey health. The choice is yours, and you'll have to pick the best option for every combat scenario.

How to wither enemies

You can actually apply the Wither status to enemies by using your Umbral Lamp to soul flay them.

When you attack an enemy that has been exposed by using soul flay, you can deal a lot of Wither damage to it. Once the soul flay ends, attack the enemy again to deal some massive damage to all of its grey health.
