Gears 5: Escape Mode, Co-Op, Cutsomisation, Map Builder And More

Gears of War 5 will be releasing soon and we decided to take a look at the new game mode ‘Escape’, an all new co-operative mode designed for a group of three players. The game mode has been well received by the community for the mechanics as well as the freedom for players to customise their own experiences via a custom map builder.

The story behind the new game mode is simple. Three Hivebusters are dropped into a Hive to carry out their mission of wiping out the heavy locust presence that reside there. Gears developer, The Coalition, have confirmed the starting trio of characters are Lahni, Keegan and Mac.

Hivebusters Have Different Abilities

Each Hivebuster has unique active and passive abilities. Lahni has an electric blade that can stun and damage enemies, Mac has the ability to deploy a portable shield that makes him invulnerable for a short time and Keegan can replenish ammunition for all players.

As you progress through the game, you can unlock more weapons for your loadout and Skill cards which have been added from Horde mode from Gears 4.

Heavy Emphasis on Co-Op Play

Escape mode heavily emphasises high quality squad gameplay thanks to the diverse abilities each Hivebuster possesses. The rooms in Escape mode are packed with enemies making teamwork essential in order to set a fast time and to get a high placement on the leaderboards.

While attempting to secure the fast time, there are a few areas in Escape aptly named safe rooms. Once inside, players can resupply their ammo, grenades and save their progress if you fail to complete the escape on the first attempt.

Map Builder And Customisation

In Escape you have the ability to change the difficulty through modifiers. Some modifiers double enemy damage and adding even more enemies into the level. You can unlock extra modifiers after you have completed Escape with the first three modifiers turned on.

Fancy your hand at creating your own unique Escape level? Players will be able to create their own Escape maps with a 2D map builder. Once you’ve made your level, you can upload it for everyone to play under one condition, you can beat the level yourself! You have to make sure the fiendish level you’ve made is possible to beat before everyone else can get their hands on it.

The mode can be played online and locally through split-screen on Xbox One and PC.
