Gearbox Software has seen several rumours surrounding it lately. Having denied they're co-developing a new Borderlands game with another studio, publishers Take-Two Interactive gave us an outline of Gearbox's upcoming plans during their full-year earnings call.
As outlined by CEO Strauss Zelnick, Take-Two intends to release 21 games this fiscal year, which covers April 2021 until March 2022. As part of this, four will be “immersive core” games: two from existing franchises, two being brand new IP. As such, Gearbox's new venture was confirmed to be one of those new games.
Take-Two Is Launching a “New Gearbox Franchise” Before April 2022
While Gearbox was acquired by the Embracer Group earlier this year, Take-Two subsidiary 2K Games revealed this wouldn't change their relationship with Gearbox, confirming:
The merger does not change 2K’s relationship with Gearbox nor our role as the publisher for the Borderlands IP or any other projects we are currently working on with the studio. We look forward to continuing our long-term partnership with this incredibly talented team and delivering many more exciting entertainment experiences to gaming fans around the world.
Within the presentation, Take-Two also revealed that Borderlands 3 was “2K’s fastest selling title”, having shipped over 13 million copies since launch. As such, it's hardly surprising they're keen to continue this existing relationship, and we'll keep you informed as we learn more.
