Fans weren't pleased with August's remaster (or 'conversion' as Rockstar put it) of Red Dead Redemption. Expectations were high after 2018 saw Red Dead Redemption 2 launch with a world full of incredible attention to detail, and the dreams of a remake seemed to grow more exciting with each passing year.
That all changed in late 2023. Aghast with the announcement of the original 2010 game being rereleased on the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, discourse revolved around graphics seeming largely unchanged and multiplayer being totally removed. The outrage only grew when it was revealed that the port would run at an archaic 30 FPS, all for the bafflingly high price of $49.99 / £39.99.
Despite the free inclusion of the legendary Undead Nightmare DLC, fans have been firm in their disapproval. Original developers Rockstar and the studio behind the porting Double Eleven have clearly been listening, as the recent 1.03 update has introduced the long-awaited option to toggle 60 FPS.
Does the Red Dead Redemption Remaster have 60 FPS?
It couldn't have been easy (game development never is), but it looks like an effort has been made to include 60 FPS in the Red Dead Redemption remaster. PlayStation 5 players that have downloaded the game through backwards compatibility can find the option to change the game's frame rate via display options.
Excitement has been rippling at the potential implications of this update. On Twitter, fans were seen speculating about the future of the Red Dead franchise.
Man I hope Rockstar will also make a next gen version for RDR2's 5th anniversary in a few weeks!
Rockstar has taken into account the feedback from the community. The price seems more justifiable now!
Strangely, the option for 60 FPS isn't available for base PS4 or Nintendo Switch players. It's unknown if the developers plan to make the mode available for all in the future, but for the time being, it's better than nothing.
Still, it's ultimately for players to decide whether or not the port is worth £39.99.
