New Overwatch 2 update might make support characters obsolete

Activision Blizzard has made a lot of weird decisions with Overwatch 2 and it looks like the company will continue to do that with the shooter. For Season 9, the shooter is getting an update that might make support characters obsolete, as every other character will soon be able to self-heal.

The game’s official blog confirmed that Tank and Damage characters will have a self-healing passive that gives these heroes more options to stay alive. While the post promises that this is a tuned-down version of the self-healing passive, this option could make support characters feel less useful.

“In Season 9, both Tank and Damage heroes will get a modified, tuned-down version of the Support self-healing passive,” said the post. “This should give non-Support players more options in terms of sustaining themselves.”

In defense of this decision, characters can sustain a ton of damage in Overwatch 2, and using the passive might not be enough. So in that sense, support characters will still play a huge role in the game, since healing will still be important during the midst of battle.

Season 9 will have other changes coming to Overwatch 2, including a new version of Quickplay called Quickplay: Hacked. These changes to Quickplay will make the game much more fast-paced, which means faster respawns and shorter matches.

However, there’s no denying that this is another odd decision in a game filled with them. Fans were pretty angry when Activision Blizzard canceled the highly-anticipated Hero Missions, which would have added more story content to the shooter. Now, this just feels like a meaningless update to the original game, making the sequel label feel like a pointless move.

Overwatch 2 remains a controversial game to this day, as many fans don’t like how it went free-to-play, since it means a reliance on Battle Passes and microtransactions.
