The Game Awards shocked Final Fantasy 16 fans everywhere when the game’s first expansion was announced, then stealth dropped for everyone to purchase. News of the DLC drop was received so well that a store in Japan closed just so the owner could play through this expansion.
On Twitter, the gaming account Genki translated a hilarious story of a store’s sign that explained it was closed so the owner could play the expansion. Quite bluntly, the sign translates to "Due to the distribution of the FF16 DLC, all of the staff have returned home."
Considering how there were reports that Final Fantasy 16 didn’t sell too well in Japan, this is quite the opposite of that fact. Granted, Japan is a huge country, so there were bound to be fans of the game, but seeing a whole store close for this is insane.
Admittedly, Echoes of the Fallen does have plenty of content to keep fans of the game happy, especially if they like the combat. Clive’s level cap has been raised, so he can grow even stronger, and there are plenty of new weapons to get as he slashes through new enemies.
Echoes of the Fallen is only Final Fantasy 16’s first expansion, with the second one, The Rising Tide, slated for a Spring 2024 release. The Rising Tide will have Clive taking on the Eikon known as Leviathan, who is an iconic summon in Final Fantasy games.
Square Enix fans ate pretty well when it came to The Game Awards, as the show was also home to a new Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth trailer. Unsurprisingly, that game ended up winning next year’s most-anticipated game, which is an award based on hype but that’s just how this industry rolls.

Final Fantasy 16 is available now on the PlayStation 5, with a PC port coming out shortly. No word yet on the game coming to Xbox Series systems, as the console isn’t even home to Final Fantasy 7 Remake yet.
