The recent Insomniac leak has mostly led to interesting Spider-Man and Wolverine news, which has gotten many PlayStation fans excited for the future. Intriguingly, Insomniac’s decision to go full Marvel seemingly comes from the fact that they chose to make Marvel’s Spider-Man over a Sunset Overdrive sequel.

According to the massive Insomniac leak, which fans can find anywhere if they’re internet savvy enough, the company considered making a Sunset Overdrive 2 with a 2016 release. However, Marvel’s Spider-Man came out in 2017, showing that Insomniac decided to choose the Marvel property over the Xbox IP.

While the news will disappoint many Sunset Overdrive fans, it was probably the right call since Marvel’s Spider-Man has been a hit franchise for PlayStation. It seems that the game’s success led to Sony buying Insomniac, as the company became PlayStation exclusive a year after the release of Spider-Man.

The move to go with Spider-Man has paid dividends, as the company has been one of Sony’s premiere studios since. The first game was released to critical acclaim, as were its successors Miles Morales and Spider-Man 2. It’s easy to see why fans are excited for the third game in the series, not to mention Insomniac’s upcoming Wolverine game.

Fans can see a lot of what made Spider-Man great in Sunset Overdrive, which had a similar colorful open world for players to wreak havoc in. Granted, it was a lot more focus on the weapons, but there was still a good amount of fun traversal to be had. A sequel would have been nice, but we can’t deny that Insomniac made the smart move here.

It’s a shame that we had to find out this way, especially since there are many more damning leaks out there regarding Insomniac. Unfortunately, this isn’t just cool game stuff and we hope that the company recovers after this massive attack on their privacy.
