The Game Awards had a lot of surprises for fans, including the announcement of a new expansion for God of War enthusiasts called God of War Ragnarok Valhalla.

Valhalla is a rogue-lite-inspired experience that will see Kratos reach the shores of the majestic hall alongside Mimir. It's set after the epic battle against Odin and the departure of Atreus, Kratos' son.

If this description already got you excited, then hearing the rest will make your head explode: God of War Ragnarok Valhalla is a free expansion that comes out on December 12.

The reason behind the decision to make Valhalla a free DLC piece of content is because according to Sony Santa Monic, the studio wants to thank the GoW fanbase after Ragnarok reached over 15 million copies sold.

Valhalla looks like a perfect expansion

If you've never played a rogue-lite before, you must know that the gameplay is based on trial and error. You'll explore Valhalla, getting upgrades, and making Kratos stronger as he searches for answers following the disappearance of Atreus.

It's worth noting that if you haven't finished the story of Ragnarok you can still boot up this expansion. Do note that you'll be heavily spoiled since it takes place immediately after the end of the game.

In a blogpost, Sony gave some more details regarding the gameplay of Valhalla. It will include a total of five difficulties, armour customization which is completely cosmetic (it won't give you permanent stat boosts).

As you play through Valhalla, you will be required to choose a single shield and a path of Spartan Rage for each run. Additionally, you will need to make wise decisions regarding which temporary Glyphs to use for upgrading your stats, which Perks to select, which Runic Attacks to wield, and more.
