At this stage, Battle Passes have become a staple for live service games. Offering players additional rewards that usually include fresh cosmetics, EXP bonuses, equipment, and more, these come in pre-selected tiers, and don't always include a lot of options that players actually want.
However, a recent patent listing (spotted by GameRant) by EA could change this approach. Dubbed the "Seasonal Reward Distribution System", this new system looks set to allow branching options, letting players decide what rewards they'd prefer like an RPG skill tree.
EA's Patented A New Battle Pass System, Letting You Choose The Rewards Path
Published on May 13, it's described as a "non-linear map", offering several pathways to pick between and the included illustration is reminiscent of a Mario Party board. This patent also mentions four different pass tiers, going beyond your normal free and premium options.
Now, it's worth remembering that patents don't necessarily guarantee an idea will come to light and even if it does, this may not be implemented for some time. However, it does show that EA are looking at ways to improve their system, and we'll keep you updated as we learn more.
