Destiny 2 wasn’t the best live-service game last year, with The Final Shape getting delayed from its original November release. It seems things are getting worse, as game director Joe Blackburn has said he will soon be leaving Bungie for greener pastures.

Blackburn confirmed on Twitter that the next playtest for Destiny 2’s upcoming expansion, The Final Shape, will be the end of his tenure with Bungie. The director also confirmed that he will be replaced by Tyson Green, who has been with the company for several years and has worked on Halo PvP, among other things.

“This ritual will be especially meaningful to me personally, as it will also serve as a moment to pass the torch of Destiny 2 Game Director to the next era of leadership as I head on a new adventure outside the walls of Bungie,” Blackburn wrote.

It might sound ridiculous, but Bungie has delayed The Final Shape again, as the expansion is currently planned for a June 4 release after originally getting a late February date. More time to fix the expansion is always a good thing, this just goes to show how troublesome it can be to try and manage a live-service shooter.

Bungie has been having a rough time as of late, as the Destiny 2 developer went through some rough layoffs last year. Those layoffs may have led to the delay of The Final Shape, but that’s far from the worst thing to happen.

Unfortunately, it seems that 2024 won’t be any better when it comes to layoffs, as Embracer Group recently fired a ton of Eidos Montreal employees. What made this a real shame was that they were working on a new Deus Ex game for two years and now it's been canceled.
