Crossovers between video games and board games aren’t anything new. Various franchises have a tabletop equivalent for players to enjoy and it appears Activision wants to get a piece of the pie.

While most of the focus is on the launch of Season 3 Reloaded for Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2, the publisher behind the Call of Duty franchise has revealed plans to release a strategic tabletop title based on the hugely successful shooter series.

Although members of the community are excited by the announcement, there are many that are wondering why, considering its current multiplayer and battle royale offerings are riddled with bugs and glitches.

Does Call of Duty need a board game?

First reported by Variety, ‘Call of Duty: The Board Game,’ is a strategy game that involves players doing battle across a range of maps synonymous with the franchise. Additionally, it will feature iconic weaponry.

Set for release in 2024, Call of Duty will become the latest gaming franchise to have its very own board game. The likes of Fallout, Skyrim, and Rainbow Six: Siege have tabletop variations of their digital counterparts, with some of them proving extremely popular.

However, CoD fans were quick to criticise the announcement. “How many bugs will it have? Hoping it’s a true-to-form product,” jokes one fan. “No focus group said yes to this,” claims another fan.

Despite the community questioning the release, a Call of Duty board game is an interesting prospect. As one of the largest franchises in all of gaming, expanding into another market makes plenty of sense, especially with Activision looking to generate as much revenue as possible

Call of Duty fans are some of the most passionate in the world. We’ve already seen a collection of themed scented candles appear so a board game isn’t the most outlandish the publisher could have commissioned.
