Since launching in 2003, the Call of Duty franchise has cemented its position as one of the very best first-person shooter franchises available to play. Whether it's Warzone or the latest annual release, the series takes players through a variety of settings ranging from World War II to the near future with each displaying slight differences with their multiplayer experience.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare set the ball rolling with a franchise-defining multiplayer and gripping single-player storyline while many consider Treyarch’s Black Ops 2 as the benchmark.

With plenty of opinions, the community is debating which is the very best Call of Duty title to release since the launch of the franchise.

What's the best Call of Duty title?

The debate begins on the Warzone Reddit after user “Able_Ad4454” posed the question alongside a picture of the Hijacked map from Black Ops 2. As expected, the community were quick to share their thoughts.

Numerous comments declare Infinity Ward’s 2007 release of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare to be the best thanks to the introduction of a perk system, well-designed maps, and the iconic Prestige levelling system.

Following close behind is 2009’s Modern Warfare 2, which evolved CoD4’s multiplayer with further weapon customisation and a new batch of killstreaks.

Others mention Treyarch’s first and second Black Ops entries as the best thanks to their campaigns and innovations, such as COD Points and League Play, which many believe is the best competitive playlist to ever feature in a Call of Duty title. “Black Ops 2 had it all,” says one fan. “A ton of fantastic maps at launch, excellent weapon balance, fun streaks, and League Play.”

Amongst other titles, one claims Warzone is the best Call of Duty title. The battle royale injected a breath of fresh air into the franchise following the reboot of the Modern Warfare series in 2019 and, since its launch, Warzone continues to attract millions of players to matches.

In our opinion, the most impactful release in recent years is certainly Warzone. But when taking a look at the entire franchise, Black Ops 3 is arguably the very best time you could have had with the series. The advanced movement mechanics worked well, maps were well-designed, and although its competitive playlist wasn’t the best, innovations such as ban and protect were ahead of their time.
