While many RPG fans have their sights firmly set on the release of Starfield in September, Baldur’s Gate 3 has also been earning a lot of attention ahead of its full release next week.

Promising plenty of cool quests and battles, the game, which has been in early access since late 2020, is bound to attract plenty of loyal PC players upon arrival. Most of this legion will have been planning their first playthrough for a long time.

With a wide range of races and classes to choose between, these would-be adventurers are facing some tough decisions, and if a recent Reddit thread is anything to go by, a lot of them are currently dealing with some last minute anxiety about the combat effectiveness of their prospective characters.

Have you already got your first Baldur’s Gate 3 build all planned out?

In a recent post to the game’s subreddit, user Unlucky_Lifeguard_81 has attempted to provide some support to those questioning the viability of their planned build, posting a video encouraging such worriers to just go with the flow.

This slightly tongue-in-cheek inspiration certainly seems to have been pretty effective with regards to those considering rather meme-worthy builds, such as a “Bardbarian” or a “Monkshroom.”

That said, the thread that resulted from it also featured a bunch of serious advice for those actually going through some legitimate build-based doubt that might impact their enjoyment of the game at launch.

“For anyone legitimately questioning their build viability, a good rule of thumb is [that], so long as it doesn't require more than three ability scores, it is viable,” declared user Mountain_Revenue_353. They went on to provide some examples of what ideal skill setups for some specific builds could look like and how they could differ from builds that dip into multiple classes.

Similarly, user Necht0n argued: “If you want a ‘viable’ build, pick a class, and stay in that class. Level the primary attribute to 20 first, then [do the same to] constitution, dexterity or feats, [it’s] your choice. Boom. Your build is viable.”

Thankfully, it looks like a number of veteran players are planning on making a concerted effort to treat those seeking advice well.

As user triclops41 declared in the thread: “Those of us who can comfortably navigate all these choices need to have patience and remember how intimidating it was to make all these character creation decisions before we knew what we were doing.”
