Yoshinori Kitase Reflects On Final Fantasy 7's Development, Calls Vincent His Favourite Character

To mark Final Fantasy VII's PlayStation Now debut, Yoshinori Kitase - director and writer for the original PS1 version - wrote a PlayStation Blog to talk about the game. Throughout this piece, he details VII's origins, how it benefitted from being on PS1 and why this new technology was challenging.

Near the end of this piece, Kitase begins discussing his thoughts on the characters, saying how the team "created many compelling characters, each with their own deep stories and arcs." As part of this, he names optional party member Vincent Valentine as his own favourite.

Yoshinori Kitase Reflects On Final Fantasy 7's Development, Calls Vincent His Favourite Character

Calling Vincent a "type of character that did not exist" before VII, Kitase encourages players to "thoroughly explore a certain mansion" when playing, stating:

My personal favorite is Vincent Valentine. He’s an optional party member – so if you’re playing the game for the first time on PS Now, make sure you thoroughly explore a certain mansion… that’s all I’ll say. I like the character because he’s the kind of dark hero who would typically appear in horror movies, and the type of character that did not exist in the Final Fantasy games before that point.

While Vincent has yet to appear within Final Fantasy VII Remake, we were recently introduced to VII's other (previously) optional party member in Intergrade, Yuffie Kisaragi. With Remake set to encompass wider elements of Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, hopefully VII Remake Part 2 will offer a reintroduction.
