The PS5 is now the fastest selling console in US history, according to the latest NPD figures for March 2021.
PS5 Now Fastest Selling Console In US History
The figures reveal that Sony's latest system has managed to surpass the PS4 in terms of both dollar sales, and units sold. It managed the dollar figure in February, but was still a touch behind the PS4 in terms of absolute units. As of March though, the PS5 has surpassed the PS4's 5 month performance.
Obviously, with people stuck at home during the pandemic demand has arguably been higher than usual, but the circumstances have introduced complexities of their own, not least in a global semiconductor shortage that has made it difficult for fans to get their hands on stock. It's a solid effort from Sony all round, and a commendable achievement in the circumstances.
In terms of absolute sales though, Nintendo Switch continued to dominate in terms of both dollar sales and units shifted during March, topping the charts in both respects. It's also sold the most units throughout the first quarter of 2021, though PS5 leads the way in terms of dollar sales.
On the software front, Outriders performed well, claiming third in the charts despite launching on Xbox Game Pass too. Meanwhile, Switch exclusives continued to dominate the charts, with Monster Hunter Rise pipped to the top spot by Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Super Mario 3D World, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Super Mario 3D All Stars and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe all made the top ten.
