Yakuza fans will definitely want to tune in to the upcoming RGG Summit stream this upcoming September 24, as leaks have all but confirmed that a remake of the third entry in the series is coming: Yakuza Kiwami 3.
This leak doesn’t come from a source outside RGG Studio. The actual development team accidentally leaked it, as users spotted that Yakuza Kiwami 3 was listed on the official Ryu Ga Gotoku website before being promptly deleted. The damage was, sadly, already done.
The Yakuza series started all the way back in 2005, but many newer players default to Yakuza Kiwami, a 2016 remake that enhances the experience in just about every way, not to mention it’s easier to find as RGG has ported it to modern systems. In 2017, a remake of the second game, Kiwami 2, hit shelves.
While reviews at the time praised it for its continuous innovations, over time, fans grew to dislike Yakuza 3 due to its gameplay, with enemies taking too long to be defeated, making the combat sections a slog to play through, boss fights a nightmarish scenario, and overall padding the game's length even more.
Beyond that, RGG delivered a solid Yakuza experience, with a great character-driven plot and goofy side quests players had come to expect from the franchise.
Hopefully, Yakuza Kiwami 3 can fix some of the issues the original release had without changing the core elements that made some fans love it. It’s unlikely we see another Yakuza project (now called Like a Dragon outside Japan, starting with Infinite Wealth) at the event, considering that RGG has got their hands full with Virtua Fighter 6 and Stranger Than Heaven, a next-gen looking action game set in the early 20th century.
