  • Primary Subject: Future location possibilities and timeline mechanics for the Resident Evil franchise.
  • Key Update: In a recent interview with media outlet Gutaman, series producer Masato Kumazawa confirmed that Capcom does not restrict itself to a rigid, chronological timeline.
  • Status: Developer Insight / Concept Phase (Not officially confirmed for an upcoming title).
  • Last Verified: June 2, 2026
  • Quick Answer: Kumazawa revealed that while a Japanese backdrop isn't locked in, the predominantly domestic development team frequently pitches the idea as a way to innovate and tackle fresh cultural horror themes.

There has never been a Resident Evil game set in Japan, but there's a chance that could change for future games.

Resident Evil Requiem is set in the Midwest, while Resident Evil 4 was set in Spain. Africa was featured in Resident Evil 5, while a fictionalized Chinese city of Lanshaing was featured in Resident Evil 6.

So many locations have appeared in the RE franchise, but not Japan, which is odd, as the game is produced there. But perhaps that could change soon.

It was revealed that even though the game has centered on showing characters like Leon Kennedy growing older, Capcom actually doesn't have any boundaries on the Resident Evil timeline. This means that they are actually flexible on when future games could be set.

Kumazawa added, "That said, we do modify the date on the assessment to help current gamers feel more immersed. Depending on the people and plot we wish to show in each game, the timeline also changes. Scenes from eight years ago and even earlier eras can be found in Requiem. So, the specific title will determine where the timeline proceeds from here."

As for where the future games will be set, Kumazawa revealed that he has considered setting a future Resident Evil title in Japan. In fact, other members of the development team have had similar thoughts before.

He stated, "I think setting the game in Japan is something every Japanese Resident Evil fan has thought about, and I’ve also thought about it myself. Since the development team is primarily based in Japan, I think every member has considered it at some point. While Japan hasn’t appeared as a game location so far, it might make an appearance at some point in the future.

However, this doesn't confirm that the future games will be set in Japan. But it's not impossible either, as Capcom intends to innovate with each new entry so that the franchise doesn't become stable. The core elements will remain the same, but they intend to take on new challenges moving forward.
