What's Next for Kirby on Switch 2? Exploring Where He Goes After Air Riding Forgotten Lands

Kirby Air Riders

Kirby Air Riders

Kirby is off to a pretty strong start on the Switch 2, with Air Riders coming soon and Forgotten Land getting new content exclusive to this system. While Air Riders is something fans have wanted for the longest time, most are waiting to see what mainline game is next for the pink puffball. Nintendo definitely has plans for this little guy; we’re just wondering in what form he will debut next.

Forgotten Land makes a strong case for its next game to be in 3D, since it’s mostly unexplored territory for this pink icon. Some fans are also expecting a return to 2D, whether it be a remake like Return to Dreamland or a new project like Star Allies. Realistically, we could see another random Kirby spin-off game, as anything can happen with this Smash Bros. star.

The Case for 3D

A new Kirby game in 3D would show off what the Switch 2 can do, while also expanding on Forgotten Land. While Forgotten Land was an excellent game, it adhered to the more linear 3D platforming style seen in Crash Bandicoot and Super Mario 3D Land, when it could have been more like Super Mario Odyssey. Having a new Switch 2 game in 3D could expand Kirby’s horizons more, going for similar breakthroughs seen in Donkey Kong Bananza.

Obviously, we wouldn’t mind a new 2D game or even a remake of Planet Robobot from the 3DS. 2D Kirby games are still a good time and can offer hours of fun. It just feels like a “safe” genre for the character right now, as most of his games have been in the 2D realm. Expanding to 3D would really help this character and his abilities feel fresh again.

Spin-off Mayhem

If Kirby’s track record in previous Nintendo systems is anything to go by, you know the company will want to do something wacky and cheap with him. Kirby Fighters 2, Kirby Dream Buffet, Kirby Clash Deluxe, these are all solid spinoff games on Switch, and we imagine some of them will get sequels on Switch 2.

Nintendo hasn’t released any major free-to-play games on Switch 2 yet, so Kirby Clash 2 would be a fun game to try out. Clash is the closest this hungry puffer has gotten to starring in an RPG, so a sequel to that could be fun. It would be even better if they decide to make it a paid game, but only time will tell if they go with that route.

Whatever Nintendo does with Kirby next should be interesting, as the company clearly has a lot of love for the character. Most fans view him as an easy #4 in the company’s hierarchy of IPs, only losing to Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon. Because Nintendo can take more risks with Kirby, expect to see something wild when his next non-Air Riders game is announced for Switch 2.
