Kirby Air Riders will be the pink puffball’s first from-the-ground-up Switch 2 game, as Forgotten Land is an upgraded Switch 1 title with extra content. Fans never thought they would see this game, as it’s a successor to Kirby Air Ride on GameCube, something Nintendo has ignored in recent years.
Something Nintendo hasn’t ignored, however, is Kirby, who continues to be one of the company’s most used properties. He has multiple racing games, fighting games, and RPGs, showing that he’s just as versatile as Mario, sometimes more.
Even if he isn’t always treated that way, it’s clear that Nintendo treats Kirby like a secret weapon. Due to the character’s design and abilities, he’s allowed to be used in experimental titles that Nintendo would never put Mario in. It will be interesting to see if this streak for the character continues in this generation.
Need to Sell Something Weird? Put Kirby in It
As I mentioned earlier, Kirby has to be one of the most versatile properties that Nintendo owns. Time and time again, the company makes him star in smaller games for experimentation and fun releases. Some have even argued that Kirby is the true mascot of Nintendo, as his output is arguably more interesting than Mario’s.

When Nintendo uses Mario, it’s usually for something casual-friendly. You can see that in the various sports and racing games the Italian plumber stars in. The “weirdest” Mario game out there is Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, an RPG so out there that Nintendo made each installment after TTYD dull and New Super Mario Bros-esque.
But if Nintendo wants to make an odd racing game to compete with Fall Guys, they’ll make Kirby Dream Buffet. If Nintendo wants to make a smaller fighting game on the eShop, they will develop Kirby Fighters 2, not Mario Brawlers 2 or whatever a Mario fighting game would be called. Kirby’s cute design and unique abilities just allow him to be in more interesting projects than Mario.
Put Some Respect in His Puyo
Even if Kirby doesn’t always get the same AAA treatment Mario gets, he is arguably more interesting. The fact that he regularly goes up against cosmic beings or incarnations of evil is fascinatingly hilarious, since he’s just a little circle with a face.
Believe it or not, that’s just the appeal of Kirby. It’s why games like Kirby and the Forgotten Land sell so well, because fans want to see what this pink guy is up to. The fact that his games regularly have plenty of post-game content also helps, so Nintendo fans know they’re getting their money’s worth.
Kirby Air Riders will likely be another hit for Masahiro Sakurai’s invention, and further proof that this guy is Nintendo’s secret weapon. He might be a pink cotton candy creature that eats people, but his sheer volume of games makes Kirby valuable to the eyes of many.
