- Quick Answer: Check out the extensive development process and collaboration between Capcom and Square Enix that led to Tifa's inclusion in Street Fighter 6.
Tifa joining Street Fighter 6 was a long process. So long it started all the way back in 2023, when Capcom’s fighter was just releasing, and Square Enix was all hands on deck putting the finishing touches (no pun intended) on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
In a recent interview with Denfaminicogamer, game director Takayuki Nakayama revealed that the initial conversations about Tifa joining Street Fighter began in September 2023, following a presentation at the Tokyo Game Show alongside FFVII Remake trilogy director Naoki Hamaguchi.

By this point, both Nakayama and Street Fighter 6 producer Shuhei Matsumoto had discussed Tifa joining the roster, in a collaborative effort that would help both Capcom and Square Enix boost the popularity of Street Fighter and Final Fantasy.
Nakayama stated: “We had always talked about wanting to do a collaboration, so I think we were already saying back then, 'If it's going to happen, it has to be with Tifa."
The process saw Square be very hands on, as the team at Capcom constantly asked for feedback on ideas being implemented, with Tetsuya Nomura being involved in the discussions between both companies at one point, according to Nakayama.
“First, we refined the design ourselves. Then, we had the Square Enix team check it , and we went through a very detailed back-and-forth exchange. Things like, ‘Could we make the shoulders just a little bit wider...?"
The development involved more than just Tifa’s design, as both Capcom and Square went over every minute detail, including how she’d look in the reveal trailer, Arcade mode illustrations, and more. Naturally, after being asked about gameplay, Nakayama didn’t share further details beyond what we know: Materia will be a part of her gameplay.
Personally? I hope to see a limit-break install of some kind. In any case, Tifa in Street Fighter 6 is expected to release in early 2027 ahead of Final Fantasy VII Revelation as part of Year 4 alongside newcomers Yasmine, Arjun, and Bosch.
