  • Quick Answer: The Nintendo Switch 2 received a new feature called Handheld Mode Boost that improves how original Switch games perform when played in handheld mode.

Nintendo just updated the Switch 2 with an incredible quality-of-life feature that will make your og Switch games even better in handheld mode.

On March 16, a new patch was released, adding the Handheld Mode Boost option to the console. It will let Switch 1 games run as if they were in TV mode on Switch 2 in handheld mode, finally taking advantage of the much more powerful hardware of Nintendo's latest hybrid console.

There may be some hiccups with games that play differently in TV vs handheld mode, but off the top of my head, there aren't any major titles where this would be an issue. In any case, this is a major win, especially for games that didn't get a Switch 2 edition upgrade but desperately need one.

I've personally tested this feature with Astral Chain, and the difference in image quality is outstanding and immediately noticeable. Sadly, since this game is locked at 30 FPS, you won't get any further enhancements.

How To Use Handheld Mode Boost On Nintendo Switch 2

Simply follow these steps

  1. Select System Settings on the HOME Menu.
  2. Scroll down through the System Settings menu and select System.
  3. Scroll down on the right and select Nintendo Switch Software Handling.
  4. Select Handheld Mode Boost to enable or disable this setting.

Some things you should note include the fact that the battery might last a little bit less since you're demanding more from the hardware. Furthermore, do note that this will treat your Switch software as if it were playing in TV mode, which could prevent you from using touch functionalities in certain games. It will also cause the Joy-Con controllers to be detected as a Switch 2 Pro Controller.
