Stranger Than Heaven, Ryu Ga Gotoku's newest IP, finally has a release window, set to launch this winter on Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, and PC (via Steam), as well as day one via Game Pass.
The May 6 deep dive gave fans a better look at what the game actually is, which essentially boils down to more Yakuza/Like a Dragon. It's not necessarily a bad thing, as production seems to be more in line with a big-budget AAA title paired with a more serious tone, while maintaining the brisk-paced action of the first Yakuza games as well as plenty of side activities to immerse yourself in.
Saying this is more Yakuza is not just figuratively, as early in the presentation, characters in Stranger Than Heaven name-dropped the Tojo Clan, one of the more prominent Yakuza clans in RGG's IP. How tied it will be to the franchise remains to be seen.
The game itself looks quite polished, with combat that feels heavy and impactful on each hit. It's gruesome, gnarly and very kinetic. As for the story, while major details remain under wraps, having the Tojo Clan named will likely tie the story somewhat to the Yakuza franchise. That being said, the story is a 50-year epic that will start in the 1910s with a Japanese-American character named Makoto Daito, who finds a second opportunity in Japan after losing it all back in the United States.
