Roblox is dealing with significant legal action after a scary case exposed problems with the platform’s approach to child safety.
In May 2025, a 13-year-old girl from West Des Moines, Iowa, was allegedly groomed on Roblox by a man pretending to be a teenager.
She was later abducted from her grandmother’s home, transported across state lines, and repeatedly sexually assaulted.
The man, now identified as a 37-year-old predator, has since been arrested and charged with multiple counts of statutory rape, though more charges are expected to follow.
A lawsuit was officially filed this August 4 in Polk County, Iowa, targeting Roblox Corporation for enabling this grooming and abuse.
How Did Roblox Allegedly Fail to Protect Users?
The lawsuit claims this tragedy wasn’t a one-off but stemmed from years of corporate negligence.

The family’s attorneys allege that Roblox permitted predators to be on its platform while claiming it was a secure and educational place for children.
The attorneys describe Roblox as a “digital hunting ground,” claiming the company prioritized engagement metrics and profit growth over user protection—especially for its most vulnerable audience: kids.
Is Grooming Common On Roblox?
Representing this case, Stinar Gould Grieco & Hensley and Milberg say they speak for over 400 families with comparable experiences on Roblox and Discord.

According to filings in court, suspected child exploitation reports on Roblox surged from less than 700 cases in 2019 to more than 13,000 in 2023.
Despite having clear knowledge of this trend, the attorneys argue that Roblox chose not to act in ways that could’ve made a difference—such as enforcing strict age verification, strengthening parental controls, and limiting direct messaging between minors and adults.
What Kind of Promises Did Roblox Make?
What makes this case worse is that Roblox kept portraying itself as a safe platform designed for kids.

The company launched multiple campaigns over the years, claiming that safety was one of their top priorities.
It marketed its app as a place “designed for ages 8–18,” reassured parents with phrases like “safety is in our DNA,” and promised the use of advanced moderation tools to filter out harmful content.
However, according to leaked internal discussions and whistleblower claims referenced in the lawsuit, employees at Roblox had concerns that stricter protections might hurt user engagement and revenue. According to the legal team, these concerns were swept under the rug.
How Is Roblox Defending Itself?
Roblox has responded with a standard statement, noting that it will not comment on active litigation but reaffirming its “commitment to the safety and well-being” of its users.

Company representatives claim they continue to invest in safety technologies, moderation systems, and partnerships with law enforcement.
Critics and the family argue that real changes happened only after multiple incidents made headlines. One of the attorneys even described the company’s actions as “too little, too late.”
Public backlash increased after a CEO's comment from earlier this year came back up.
When asked about the platform’s risks, the CEO had suggested that parents who are concerned about their children's safety should simply not let their kids play Roblox.
Many say this dismissive attitude reveals a lack of responsibility from a platform that targets kids but keeps failing to put real safety measures in place.
The lawsuit is pursuing compensatory and punitive damages, based on claims of negligence, misrepresentation, and liability.
Roblox may not be the only platform facing scrutiny, but with hundreds of similar cases already underway, it’s clear this one could set a major legal precedent.
