Pokemon GO is still one of the most popular mobile games ever, despite many dismissing it as a fad years ago. Niantic is celebrating in a big way, as the company will increase the trainer level cap for the first time. Originally ending at Level 50, it’s been confirmed that the new level cap is now Level 80, giving fans another reason to replay this pseudo-exercise app.

Like a lot of mobile game updates, this new level cap has positives and negatives. On paper, having more levels to get to is a good thing, because more reasons to play and additional rewards to farm. However, this new update will remove some of those rewards, which is pretty disappointing to other players.

When will this change be made? How much time do players have to catch up? Here’s everything we know about the brand-new Pokemon GO Level 80 cap.

Release Date

The new Pokemon GO level cap will begin on October 15. Fans who have been at Level 50 for the longest might level up when the update hits, as Niantic promised to include the XP players have gotten in recent years. Expect to reach several levels if you’ve been playing passed 50 over the years, though we can’t promise players will already reach Level 80.

Research Tasks Getting Removed

Because of the new level cap, research tasks from Level 41-50 will no longer be available after this update hits on October 15. Luckily, there’s a current XP Celebration event that encourages players to keep playing until they hit Level 50 or less.

Here are the rewards getting removed when this level cap update arrives:

  • Level 41: Avatar Glasses
  • Level 43: Avatar Pose
  • Level 45: Avatar hat
  • Level 47: Avatar Pose
  • Level 49: Avatar Boots
  • Level 50: Avatar Jacket, New Avatar Pose, Special Commemorative Medals

New Research Tasks and Rewards

Although Pokemon GO is removing some research tasks, Niantic is also adding some new ones, though it’s going to take a while for newer players. Luckily, there’s also going to be some additional rewards for players in the lower levels, so it’s not all bad.

Here are some of the new rewards and research tasks being added in this level cap update:

  • Research Tasks from Level 71-80
  • New Avatar items at Level 21
  • Level Up Progression will now include increased Pokemon storage, items, and gifts

Fans should also expect to see some new Pokemon creatures added to the mobile app to celebrate this occasion. Don’t expect Mega Victreebel, but we’re sure something will be added to keep veteran trainers and rookies happy.
