Pokemon Legends: Z-A has impressed a ton of fans with its real-time battle system and the focus on trainer battles in general. It separates this installment from the excellent Legends: Arceus, despite keeping some similar mechanics. What really separated this game from the other entries was some of the promotional material, including a surprisingly creepy trailer for Mega Victreebel.
Rather than give fans a generic gameplay trailer for Mega Victreebel, The Pokemon Company decided to do a found footage-style trailer, complete with a dark and creepy mansion. Had it not been for the cute character designs, we would have thought this was a teaser for lost Resident Evil 7 DLC. Although the ending is pretty light, it’s clear someone in The Pokemon Company likes horror, and they should make a horror Pokemon game.
A Ghastly Experience
Just to be clear, we don’t think this should be a straight-up horror game like Resident Evil or Silent Hill. Rather than go full blood and guts about it, we think a Pokemon horror game should be more like Luigi’s Mansion or that Winnie the Pooh game social media was hyping up. It should just be slightly creepy, but still look similar enough to other games like the upcoming Pokemon Legends: Z-A.
Imagine a game where your character is lost in the woods and has to survive the wilderness while rabid Pokemon are about. They can keep classic battles by making your trainer catch Pokemon via the Safari Zone method (throw rocks or snacks at them), but there will always be that uneasy feeling of rabid creatures that can attack you at night. You know fans would go crazy for this stuff.
Follow the Source Material
What’s funny is that there are so many creepy details in Pokedex entries that the basis for a Pokemon horror game makes too much sense. You can read about how Driffloon likes to kidnap kids or the mushroom in Parasect’s body taking over its consciousness in official Pokemon material. Fans still cry about the tragedy all Cubones and Marowaks go through because of that dark backstory with their skull helmets.

Pokemon has dabbled in horror before, too, so this isn’t completely new. Lavender Town has that uneasy chiptune music and the ghost of Marowak, Pokemon X and Y has that creepy ghost girl who appears out of nowhere, Pokemon Sun and Moon has a haunted trainer school event, these games love freaking kids out.
Once again, this Pokemon horror game should appeal to kids like the mainline titles. Think Gravity Falls instead of Barbarian. We hope Game Freak is already thinking about it, and The Pokemon Company can always outsource it to a different developer if needed. All we know is that fans would eat it up like they’re currently eating up Pokemon Legends: Z-A.
