Hello Games has just unveiled the “Breach Update” for No Man’s Sky, just one month after dropping their massive Voyagers expansion.
The Breach Update isn’t a total reinvention of No Man’s Sky’s mechanics like its previous updates did. Rather, it is a special Expedition mode that lets you salvage a spooky galaxy teeming with derelict and dead ships. Fans of sci-fi horror movies like Alien, Event Horizon or Sunshine will find this update worth their time.

This is Hello Games’ special Halloween celebration for their massive science fiction sandbox. Sean Murray and his team are known to always kick the Halloween season with a massive update similar to what they did in 2018 with The Abyss, which added plenty of underwater horrors that will terrify players with Thalassophobia.
The Breach Update also serves as a continuation of its Voyagers update, which introduced the game’s ambitious Corvette system, where players can create their own ship from the ground up and customize them to their hearts content. It will add new modules and materials for players to tinker their Corvettes with, so if you’re adamant in making your ship sanctuary even better, you’re more likely to join the Breach expedition and go on some deep-space plundering.

Expeditions have always been the heart of No Man’s Sky since they introduced it back in 2021. It is a separate game mode that takes players into a short-term adventure far from the endless delights of the main game. These expeditions can go from exploring Lovecraftian horrors in space, or diving into the underwater depths in search of treasure.
Think of it as No Man’s Sky’s version of a ‘single-player campaign.’ You get a few backstories to what happened in this universe as well as getting a laundry list of objectives that needed doing. It usually takes up 8-16 hours depending on your pace, and clearing an Expedition grants you rewards (like new landing gears, shields, weapons, etc) that you can take with you to the main game. The Breach Update is just one of the 22 major Expeditions Hello Games has had over the years.
No Man’s Sky’s Breach update is live and it’s completely free for all players. For more information, check out the official patch notes here.
