Need More Dispatch? The Official Comics Fill Key Story Gaps

Dispatch

Robert and the Z-Team’s adventures are unfortunately over after Dispatch’s 8-episode run has ended. As they moved on to their happy endings, fans are already itching to get their hands on a possible Season 2.

Sadly, there are no Dispatch episodes this week. But players who want to learn more about its story can read the official comics.

Note that there are spoilers to the game’s main story here. You’ve been warned.

I know what you’re thinking, “What, they have an official comic?” Yes, they do. And most players are missing out on key story beats, including the origins of Shroud’s character and the lore behind Robert’s missing chunk of ear.

The official comics are part of Dispatch’s Deluxe Edition, which is a $10 bump to its standard $20 price tag. These are bite-sized extra content that adds flavor to Dispatch’s complex characters.

The first volume delved deeper into Water Boy’s life, a character that many players seem to love. We see his day-to-day struggles before he steps into the SDN office. Additionally, it also gave us a brief introduction to Malevola and Sonar’s co-ed relationship just before their days in the Z-Team.

The second volume is all about love. It highlights the secret love story between Punch-Up and Coupe. Without spoiling anything, it covers events leading into the main story and their eventual recruitment to the Z-Team. Another story in this volume was about Phenomaman and Blonde Blazer’s messy breakup inside the sushi place. If you're curious how that turned out, this chapter gives you all the answers you need. Both stories are pretty hilarious and remain consistent with the overall tone and writing from the main game.

Perhaps the most important comics are its final two volumes. These extra chapters are important if you want to find out more about what kind of character Chase and Robert’s dad was before Mecha Man’s death. These bittersweet moments gave an extra insight into Robert’s life as a kid. If you’ve been curious about why he was missing a chunk of his ear, then these chapters provide the answer you need.

If it weren’t for these volumes, I would be completely disappointed with the reveal of Shroud’s identity. It felt like a copout in the main game, and the lack of explanation for his motivations felt generic. Then again, Dispatch wasn't about him, it was about its characters. Fortunately, The fourth volume, titled “The Death of Mecha Man,” added tidbits to his origin story. It solidifies his villainy and why Shroud is the way he is.

Personally, I find these extra comic volumes interesting. They might not add story-heavy moments in the main game, but they’re at least essential if you want to dive further into the past and get to know these characters before Robert dons the Mecha Man suit.

If AdHoc wants to expand the story even further, seasonal comic drops could help grow the universe and offer more insight into the characters before or after the events of the main game.

So if you’ve been dying to learn more about Dispatch and its universe, don’t miss out on these comics. You’re gonna have to shell out an extra $10 for it, though.
