Mega Howlucha and Mega Victreebel

Pokemon Legends: Z-A has stunned fans with its latest trailers, which show off new Mega Evolution forms for Hawlucha and Victreebel. The videos not only showcased how unique these evolved creatures are, but also showed some promising animation with different themes and storytelling methods. If these presentations are anything to go by, it’s proof that these new forms deserve the red-carpet treatment when being showcased.

Admittedly, these can be pretty tricky because not all new forms are created equally. Alolan Raichu is superior to Alolan Meowth, while the Galar forms of Zapdos, Moltres, and Articuno are all lamer than Farfetch’d’s majestic design. Regardless, more people will care if The Pokemon Company adds some pump and circumstance to each of these reveals, as we’ve seen for Mega Hawlucha and Mega Victreebell.

Mega Hawlucha Is All Elite

The reveal of Mega Hawlucha was quite spectacular, despite leaks revealing its appearance ahead of time. Fans who follow Pokemon on social media saw how this was hyped like a wrestling match, with the video even having Full Match in the title, like it was a WWE or AEW bout. Moreover, the actual video was an awesome four-minute animation that showed the struggles of this Hawlucha before eventually reaching its mega evolution.

Even fans who saw the leaks felt chills when it was officially shown, with one of the best designs we’ve ever seen in this franchise. The simplicity of making his mask golden and slight adjustments to his body feels like a “less is more” method for this character, and it paid off in spades. Fans are already making awesome art of this character based on the video, and we’re sure Pokemon Legends: Z-A owners will immediately try catching this lucha-inspired specimen.

Mega Victreebel Is Scary as Hell

On the complete other end of that spectrum is Mega Victreebel’s stellar trailer, which decided to go for the found footage horror route. Many followers of this franchise were shocked to see the horror-inspired imagery before the trailer came out, showing how influential the found footage genre is.

Either way, this was a pretty great trailer and made us wish there was a horror-esque Pokemon spinoff game. Considering all of the creepy lore we’ve seen in the Pokedex over the years, we’re surprised there aren’t any spinoff games using this genre. That could always change with Nintendo Switch 2 and Resident Evil’s continued popularity, but we’ll wait and see.

Mega Presentation, Mega Big Deal

Simply put, if The Pokemon Company treats these new Pokemon forms with importance and effort, fans will pay attention. It’s why Mega Dragonite didn’t get a ton of attention, as the form was given a standard release during one of this franchise’s tournaments. People do still like the form, but they would adore it more if the presentation were better.

Let’s hope more of these high-quality trailers are planned for future Pokemon games. Legends: Z-A is already a huge talking point thanks to its real-time battles, but these videos helped make this project feel special. We need more of them for future games, no matter what those leakers do to try and ruin things.
