This article contains SPOILERS for Resident Evil Requiem

The Severed Hand is one of the most unsettling optional items you can collect in Resident Evil 9 Requiem, and it’s intentionally designed to confuse you at first.

After leaving the Care Center basement via the elevator sequence, you’ll find the hand on the floor near the lift entrance, exactly where it was cut off earlier.

Its item description offers no practical hint beyond noting that it’s still warm, which makes it feel more like disturbing set dressing than a functional object.

However, it absolutely has a purpose—just not the kind you might expect.

When Should You Use the Severed Hand?

Once you collect it, the main thing to remember is timing, since the Severed Hand is only useful during the Care Center chapter while you’re playing as Grace.

If you complete the three main puzzle boxes and unlock the indented exit door that allows you to leave the area, you may lose the opportunity to experiment with it during this segment.

So before progressing the story further, you’ll want to investigate the item properly. To activate its hidden function, you must bring the Severed Hand to a Laser Microscope, also referred to as a Blood Analyzer.

These are the same machines used earlier in the chapter to examine blood samples and unlock crafting recipes through small molecular-style puzzles.

There are two confirmed spots for the scan — the Blood Lab in the East Wing and an upper-level office in the Care Center.

Before interacting with the machine, make sure you are not carrying Emily—set her down either with Harry on the helipad or on the sofa in the Guard Office—because you can’t operate the analyzer while holding her.

How Do You Solve the Analyzer Puzzle?

When you insert the Severed Hand into the analyzer, you’ll trigger a familiar atom-style mini puzzle.

The solution involves adjusting the outer cube nodes first and then aligning the center cube node to complete the structure.

Once solved, the machine processes the sample. Instead of rewarding you with a crafting blueprint like previous analyses, the system displays a short, cryptic message: “Let’s play.”

Alongside that message is a string of mRNA-style code: GGC AAG AUA ACG UGU CAU. This code isn’t random flavor text.

When interpreted biologically, it translates into a sequence of amino acids: Glycine, Lysine, Isoleucine, Threonine, Cysteine, and Histidine.

The technical presentation suggests the sequence belongs to a larger code, especially since players have connected it to The Final Puzzle, an elaborate hidden challenge in the menu that is still unsolved. Scanning the Severed Hand appears to unlock additional interactions elsewhere.

After analyzing it, one of the previously opened puzzle boxes gains a new input method that allows you to enter combinations using the Sun, Star, and Moon symbols.
