This article contains SPOILERS for Resident Evil Requiem

In Resident Evil Requiem, generators block several key routes during Leon’s time in East Raccoon City, and none of them will run without fuel.

To unlock shortcuts, construction access, and rooftop paths, you’ll need to track down a gas can, survive a major encounter at the gas station, and power multiple generators across the city.

Here’s exactly how to get fuel and use it properly.

When Do You Unlock Fuel Access in Resident Evil Requiem?

Securing fuel in Resident Evil Requiem is mandatory during Leon’s early East Raccoon City exploration, as multiple generators halt your progress and must be powered to unlock construction areas, rooftops, and detonator routes.

While the game teases the first generator fairly early, you won’t actually be able to refuel it right away. The fuel sequence is locked behind a short progression chain that opens up the gas station area.

Before you can even think about finding a gas can, you must advance through the city objectives. After defeating the giant spider and reaching the BSAA camp, you’ll obtain the Cedarbrook Apartments Key.

Using it opens a route that leads down into a flooded parking structure where you must locate two batteries and restore power to a gate.

Once electricity is reestablished and you climb back to street level, you’ll find yourself on the opposite side of the large crater dividing the road. This is the point where the gas station becomes accessible.

Where Is the Gas Can Located?

The gas station sits across from the parking garage ramp, but the main gate is locked.

To get inside, look to the side of the building for a folded ladder hanging out of reach. Shoot the yellow strap securing it so it drops down, then climb up and cross over wrecked vehicles to drop into the forecourt.

You’ll face resistance here, with a zombie circling the gas pumps and another lurking in the convenience store. Clear them out before moving through the shop and exiting the back door.

Behind the building, near a powerless generator and stacked crates, you’ll find the empty Gas Can. Picking it up triggers one of the larger combat encounters in this section.

As you attempt to leave the station, multiple zombies swarm the area, some igniting fuel barrels that set parts of the forecourt ablaze.

Chainsaw enemies enter the fight, including a heavily armored variant later in the encounter. The fire naturally limits movement, which can work to your advantage by funneling enemies together, but it also restricts your escape routes.

Put chainsaw enemies down first, target the legs of armored opponents to slow them, and use grenades or your shotgun when the situation gets hectic.

If a chainsaw drops, you can temporarily use it against tougher foes — including moments where you’ll clash blades with an enemy to create openings.

How Do You Fill the Gas Can?

Once the enemies are dealt with, go to the fenced section behind the station to locate a large fuel container fitted with a red valve.

Use it to top off your Gas Can completely, since one full tank provides sufficient fuel for all necessary generators in this section.

You won’t need to return for a refill. With fuel in hand, you can now activate three key generators. The first is inside the gas station itself, which opens the main gate and gives you a shortcut back to the street.

The second one is located at the nearby construction site; restoring power to it unlocks the gate and starts machinery that opens new traversal paths, including a route toward the subway.

The final generator sits on the Logistics Warehouse rooftop near the antenna and a previously collected detonator part, and powering it activates a zipline to a tougher late-game area, so be sure to bring enough healing supplies and ammo before moving forward.
