How Hideo Kojima's 20-Year Roadmap Is Going to Keep Me Alive (Literally)

I can’t shuffle off this mortal coil just yet; Hideo Kojima isn't allowing me to after he has officially dropped the bomb for his insane roadmap in the next 20 years or so.

With the "Beyond the Strand" showcase finally over, Hideo Kojima's Kojima Productions has officially entered its 10th year, and the best part is that there's still plenty more of those years coming now that he and his team have a developed a two-decade roadmap that I'd love to witness.

Here's everything revealed in the "Beyond the Strand" Showcase and what it means for me not letting go of my mortal shell just yet.

Death Stranding Anime Film (TBA)

First on the roadmap would have to be Kojima Productions' Death Stranding anime film, a project about which we know very little aside from the action-packed teaser. With a new unnamed protagonist at the helm, this is going to be far from the usual personality we've had with Norman Reedus' Sam Porter Bridges.

And with a working title under Mosquito, there are a lot of hints that our unnamed porter is not doing everything by the book, especially with his signature proboscis attached to his mouth.

There's no release date for the Death Stranding anime yet, but I'm placing my bets that it's set to come out sometime next year. It might even have a theatrical release in selected cinemas and could even receive an Oscar nomination. I've been craving for another great videogame adaptation so I'm looking forward to seeing what Kojima Productions does with this one. Who knows, it might even go toe-to-toe with FromSoftware's Sekiro anime or whatever Riot is cooking for an Arcane follow-up.

OD: Knock (TBA)

Sophia Lillis in OD: Knock.

This is Kojima at his most untethered. There's no Sony executive holding his hand, nor a Konami employee telling him what to do. It's him, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer, Jordan Peele, and a dream.

Being the first Kojima exclusive title for the Xbox family of consoles, there's a lot to expect on what OD: Knock is really all about, but there's so many question marks all over it. All we know so far is that it's a horror game and it stars an ensemble of iconic actors like IT's Sophia Lillis. Anything beyond that is just pure speculation.

We've talked about Hideo Kojima's OD: Knock at great lengths in our previous piece here, but this is one of those games that I just couldn't wait to try. Being a huge fan of horror titles, I aim to replicate the sheer terror I had with the canned P.T. demo. It was one of those horror games that really seeped into my mind. From the way Lisa moves around the ever-shifting house to the disturbing phone calls, I wish to see more of these moments in OD: Knock.

Like the Death Stranding anime, there's no release date for this yet, but my money is on a late 2026 window.

PHYSINT (2030)

This has got to be Robert Pattinson.

The action-espionage title that Hideo Kojima has been dreaming of since he moved on from his Metal Gear Solid days. This spiritual successor to his beloved tactical espionage action series is going to be a fresh new take on the spy genre.

The good news is that Kojima has unveiled the cast for PHYSINT, including Mad Max: Furiousa's Charlee Fraser, Train to Busan's Don Lee, and Godzilla Minus One's Minami Hamabe. The only question mark from the cast is who is taking the mantle of PHYSINT's main protagonist. Fans speculate, including myself, that this is going to be Robert Pattinson.

It's still in its conceptual phase, as we likely won't see this until the PlayStation 6 arrives in the next few years. So a 2030 release schedule is realistic.

This is the perfect opportunity for me to save up for the eventual PS6 console release, which I know would definitely cost more than $700 given today's economic absurdity. Plus, this is also a way for Konami to keep up with the Metal Gear Solid remakes and make that damn Vol. 2 Collection ready by now.

Death Stranding A24 Film (TBA)

Apart from the Death Stranding anime, there's also an upcoming A24 movie directed by Michael Sarnoski, known for his works with A24's Pig and A Quiet Place: Day One.

Knowing A24's history of films being produced, this Death Stranding film might be going in a more bizarre direction. It might even be as ludicrous and insane as the games, and with basically no interactable mediums like delivering cargo and pressing R2 and L2 to balance yourself, this might be a movie that people will either love or hate. As for me, I'm excited to see both reactions.

The release date is still nonexistent, which is all the more reason I refuse to let go of this mortal existence just yet. Is it going to be a 2034 movie? Who knows, but I'm willing to do whatever it takes so I can watch it on the biggest IMAX screen possible and whatever new cinema technologies are available in the near future.

Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding AR Game (TBA)

Just when we think Hideo Kojima's projects couldn't get any weirder, he's making a Pokemon GO-like game based on his Death Stranding universe. I mean, this is to be expected given the nature of Sam Porter Bridges' adventures in the two games. I just wasn't expecting it would actually be real.

Developed in partnership with Niantic, this is going to be the health hack I needed to get my daily steps to their optimal level, stretching my lifespan in the process. I could be delivering cargos to my neighbors with a baby strapped to my chest, and it would be exactly what Hideo Kojima pictured the post-apocalyptic world of Death Stranding to be. The problem with this game is whether or not it will come out before or after these other projects. Otherwise, I'd have to find other means of extending my lifespan. Nanomachines, maybe?

But come on, guys, this is basically Hideo Kojima telling us not to succumb to the darkness anytime soon. Rage against the dying of the light, or whatever. But I'm not kicking the bucket just yet until I get to play as Robert Pattinson doing cool things in PHYSINT.
