Grand Theft Auto V was released 12 years ago, and remains one of the biggest video game releases of all time. What was once a $60 product has had its value devolved over time, and platforms like PlayStation, Xbox, and Epic tend to just give them away like candy.
While I am happy that more people get to play them, I’m growing tired of subscription models like PlayStation’s PlayStation Plus, which put them on a pedestal instead of other games.

Rumor has it that this month’s PlayStation Plus Extra offering is Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar’s magnum opus. It’s returning to Sony’s Game Catalog after it had its one-year run from December 2023 to November 2024.
Leaker billbil-kun had hinted about this announcement days prior, saying that this is a Rockstar announcement people “won’t care about.”
For gamers worldwide, Grand Theft Auto V is a household name. I never bought it at launch. I merely borrowed a cousin’s copy of the game and played through on my PlayStation 4. It was a great game that elevated the open-world genre with its sheer scope and attention to detail. Now, I’ve owned GTA V on all major consoles, which is pretty ironic.
As mentioned earlier, it has already been given out on major storefronts, such as Sony. Epic Games gave away this game for free five years ago, during the midst of a global pandemic. It was such a big move that it crashed Epic’s servers. Safe to say every Fortnite player in the world already has their copy of GTA V tucked in their backlogs.

My issue here is that I’d rather get another game rather than another copy of GTA V. As a longtime PlayStation Plus Extra subscriber, when can I get The Order: 1886 for free? As a Rockstar fan, why not just give us the entire Grand Theft Auto catalog, or better yet, a remaster for Red Dead Redemption 2?
The situation is baffling. Some players even argue that this is Rockstar’s way of “softening the blow” for Grand Theft Auto VI’s delay from May 2026 to November of the same year. Moreover, it could also serve as a distraction from the high-profile studio layoffs that displaced 30 to 40 employees.
At the moment, Grand Theft Auto V’s PlayStation Plus Extra offering is a big letdown for me. No one knows if this is going to be this month’s headliner. We could get another big game for free, like Ubisoft’s Star Wars: Outlaws or Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. But considering GTA V’s popularity, I won’t be surprised if this is the only major game on offer.
