The Final Fantasy VII Remake director Naoki Hamaguchi has acknowledged fans’ long-standing requests for a Final Fantasy VI remake, but made it clear that he would prefer not to lead the project himself.

According to an interview cited by GamerBraves, Hamaguchi described Final Fantasy VI as a formative experience for him and one that still affects how he thinks about game development.

He added that the FF7 Remake has always adhered to a specific creative foundation, which is why there was no conscious effort to weave in FF6 influences, as the project was focused on honoring FF7’s established structure.

Why Doesn’t He Want to Lead Another Remake?

What really drives his point home is the timeline as hamaguchi has been tied to the FF7 Remake project for around a decade, and he’s now “seeing the end of the tunnel” as the trilogy moves toward its final part.

As a result, he was candid about questioning the wisdom of jumping straight into another remake that would demand years of leadership.

He made it clear that he doesn’t want to headline another remake, saying he’d rather back a new creative lead on FF6 and offer support rather than direct the game.

It’s also important that this whole discussion doesn’t confirm an FF6 Remake is even happening.

In short, Hamaguchi is speaking hypothetically in response to fans, not implying that Square Enix has officially greenlit anything.
