Dear Square Enix: Don't Skip Kingdom Hearts 4 at The Game Awards 2025

Kingdom Hearts

Kingdom Hearts

It’s about time Square Enix shows us something from one of gaming’s beloved JRPG franchises.

3 years have passed since we first saw Sora waking up in Quadratum in the Kingdom Hearts 4 reveal trailer, and by the fanbase’s standards, that’s equivalent to 10 years. Since then, Square Enix has gone off the grid with any news related to Kingdom Hearts. Naturally, the fans are hungry, with some going crazy at the thought of waiting for another decade for the next mainline KH title.

It was just this year that Square cancelled Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link, their Pokemon GO-like mobile game featuring major characters from the series, including Disney and Final Fantasy crossovers. It was then followed by another set of news where Square confirmed Kingdom Hearts 4’s development is still ongoing, alongside a couple of new screenshots to soften the blow of Missing Link’s cancellation.

Of course, Kingdom Hearts fans know that this is nothing but drip-fed content to pass the time. They needed something that’s more than just screenshots and brief snippets. They (including me) want a new trailer.

The Game Awards 2025, which airs Thursday, December 11, is the ideal moment where Square needs to drop at least something that proves the game’s existence. Will it be the new trailer we have always hoped for? Or is it going to be another year without any major news for Sora’s upcoming adventure?

Multiple Square Enix games, including their hit MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV, are nominated in one of The Game Awards’ extensive categories. Square is likely to appear at the event, should their games win an award.

I don’t even care about Final Fantasy VII: Part 3 at this point. We all know it’s still a long time coming. Kingdom Hearts 4, on the other hand, has been in development for almost 5 years, just after Kingdom Hearts 3’s release.

The most likely scenario, if we are being realistic, is that there will be no Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer at The Game Awards 2025. Disappointing, yes, but we are a species built on hope and coping, and disappointment is part of our nature. The entire Kingdom Hearts fanbase would go crazy with any mere mention of it from Geoff Keighley’s mouth.

If a Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer is bound to appear in The Game Awards 2025, we can possibly see the new worlds Sora will explore, other than Quadratum. The long-rumored Star Wars map could be their first reveal, or something from Disney’s animated catalog like Encanto’s Casa Madrigal. Personally? I’m expecting to see more of its gameplay and how it evolved from KH3’s flashy combat.

At this point, hoping for a new Kingdom Hearts trailer is not simple and clean. We all know that. Being a longtime fan of the series, waiting is part of the Kingdom Hearts hype, no matter how long and arduous it is.

But please, Square. Show us something. I want to see Sora and his friends again.
