As launch day closes in, Black Ops 7 is attempting to loosen the grip of CoD’s long-standing SBMM model.
After years of complaints about always landing in high-intensity lobbies, Treyarch is rethinking how it does things.
The studio says Black Ops 7’s public matches will mostly use Open Matchmaking, which puts much less weight on skill when building lobbies.
This direction follows beta feedback, indicating that Open Matchmaking made matches feel more open and less restrictive.
What About the Beta Made This Stick?
The update was plain to see during the October beta: some matches demanded your full focus, while others felt practically carefree.

Many claimed the game finally felt “fun” again instead of a constant uphill battle.
According to Treyarch, this positive community reaction was what convinced them to carry Open Matchmaking into the full release.
They described the system as “minimally considering skill,” suggesting that factors such as connection, playlist population, and party grouping will take priority instead.
Is SBMM Completely Gone?
Treyarch did confirm that one rotating playlist will continue using strong skill-based criteria, so SBMM isn’t fully gone.

This so-called Closed Matchmaking option gives players who want a more competitive experience a dedicated space.
The studio also confirmed that when Ranked Play arrives in early 2026, it will still rely on tight skill-based matchmaking like past competitive CoD modes.
Basically, casuals can take it easy, and skilled players still have a clear system to compete in.
Will Matchmaking Types Be Labeled?
Interestingly, Treyarch plans to label each playlist so players know exactly what matchmaking rules they’re stepping into.

This transparency is a notable upgrade after years of CoD games burying matchmaking types and confusing players.
Open Matchmaking is there for people who want a lighter experience. Closed playlists and Ranked (once it arrives) handle the more serious competition.
