No Skill-Based Matchmaking (SBMM) will be the default matchmaking experience for all Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Multiplayer playlists at launch, Treyarch confirms.
The major development comes after an Open Moshpit playlist, which featured the classic matchmaking style where skill is minimally considered, was trialed during the Black Ops 7 Beta.
Player feedback has since been overwhelmingly positive, ultimately leaving the developers with no choice but to make a huge U-turn ahead of the game’s release on November 14.

Announcing the news on social media, Treyarch said, “Open Matchmaking confirmed. At launch, Open Matchmaking with minimal skill consideration will be the default matchmaking for Black Ops 7 MP. Our team is committed to providing players with a more varied experience, and the Beta was a valuable opportunity to test this approach.”
It’s also been confirmed that Black Ops 7 will have non-disbanding lobbies. “We've heard the community discussion around lobby disbanding, and we're focused on keeping players together from match to match more often in Black Ops 7,” Treyarch said. “Today, we're excited to announce we'll have persistent lobbies at launch and will have more details closer to launch.”
Meanwhile, the studio added that investigations are ongoing into the feedback of aim assist being overpowered for controllers, with more information about the changes coming soon. “It's a priority of ours to have a fair and competitive balance across all input devices at launch. We'll be sharing more about potential adjustments to rotational aim assist and aim assist strength on controller ahead of Black Ops 7's launch.”

With Battlefield 6 releasing worldwide tomorrow, October 10, these changes could have just saved Call of Duty from an embarrassing defeat in the FPS battle for top spot. Whether or not it will be enough, however, remains to be seen.
Nonetheless, the Call of Duty community will no doubt be celebrating hard following this victory, and there’s no denying the magnitude of the news. This really could be the start of a significant franchise comeback.
