Absolum May Not Beat Supergiant’s Hades 2, But It’s Got One Advantage

Next to Supergiant’s Hades 2, there’s another roguelike dominating the charts this week and it’s Absolum.

Developed by the minds behind hit beat ‘em ups like Streets of Rage 4, Dotemu hones their beat ‘em up craft and mixes it with what most indie games have nowadays: It's a Roguelike. But that’s not the only best part, what makes Absolum unique from its peers is that it’s heavily reliant on its 2-player co-op system.

But we’re not talking about how good Absolum is, we’re talking about the one advantage it has against Supergiant’s Hades 2. And that’s Absolum being a multiplatform game. That advantage alone makes Absolum the most accessible roguelike game that could compete against Hades 2.

Hades 2, while a great game, is limited only to Steam and Nintendo Switch consoles. While there are plans to port the game to PlayStation and Xbox consoles, that limitation in scope reduces the amount of players discovering how great it is. Even with its 2 million sales in Steam since its Early Access period, Absolum being available in multiple platforms like PlayStation and Xbox consoles is a godsend.

More players get to play Dotemu’s latest roguelike, and more players can work together to make it out to the Absolum’s gauntlet of challenges in its 2-player co-op. However, its weakness is in its lack of a cross-play feature right now. The good news is that Dotemu is already working hard to get cross-play working in future updates, but for now, players are gonna have to make do with playing in the same console.

Absolum currently stands at 3,000 players active on Steam right now, and while there are no numbers for the other consoles, it’s still not as popular compared to Supergiant’s Hades 2 with 23,000 players still playing today. It’s not a good benchmark to tell if a roguelike game is good, as the genre has become too saturated lately, with off-shoot titles like Megabonk and Vampire Survivors also having their own niche playerbase.

Absolum's art style is great.

Absolum is available now for all consoles. It’s one of the best roguelike games this year with an 87 score in both OpenCritic and MetaCritic. It’s already shaping up to be another contender for Game of the Year, adding to the already impressive amount of indie titles that dominated this 2025 like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Blue Prince.
