Sorry, Hades 2: Megabonk is the Roguelike King Dominating Steam Right Now

Megabonk

Just when we thought this year couldn’t get any better for indie games, one comes out of nowhere slowly eclipsing some of the great indie titles in the market.

If you haven’t heard, Megabonk is the next big thing riding the roguelike craze. Imagine Vampire Survivors’ addicting system mixed with Risk of Rain’s chaotic third-person bullet hell action.

Megabonk currently has 117,000 players at its peak, with 58,000 playing as of writing on October 7. From that numbers alone, it has already surpassed Supergiant’s Hades 2’s 40,000 current players and 112,300 all-time peak record. Even popular streamers like Shroud and MoistCr1TiKaL have joined in on the fun, essentially giving Megabonk free advertising.

So what’s the deal here?

Developed and published by solo developer Vedinad, Megabonk has been consistently rising the Steam Charts. As of October 7, it has sold more than a million copies, becoming one of those games that just comes out of nowhere and dominates Steam’s Top 10 most played games. It even came close to beating Team Cherry’s Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Megabonk’s gameplay loop is simple: drop in, grab loot, lock in and turn your character into an amalgam of projectiles and AoE abilities. If you’re the kind that’s easily addicted to Survivors-like gameplay, thinking that it’d be “just one more run,” then Megabonk is the game for you.

Comparing Hades 2 and Megabonk's players.

The game has plenty of builds to choose from, just what you’d expect from a game like it. Runs don’t usually give you the best abilities yet, but as you keep playing and playing, the rewards exponentially get crazier and powerful, turning your simple projectile attacks into nuclear bombs and a whole lot more. The game gets so chaotic it could sometimes turn your character into an unstoppable force where you don’t even have to press anything, you just have to let your abilities do the talking.

Part of its success is all thanks to its affordable price tag, which seems to be a green flag when it comes to success this year. For only less than $5, you’re guaranteed to rack up 100+ hours of simply messing around and turning your character into an overpowered icon.

Just one more run,

It’s this kind of power fantasy that has always captivated roguelike players. Compared to Hades 2, where you actually had to work your way to the top and watch the story progress, Megabonk just puts you into the battlefield and you’re free to do whatever the hell you want.

And if you’re curious to know what makes this game special, you can pick up the game right now for the price of a regular coffee.
