Destiny 2 Beyond Light: New raid details, Bungie’s DeeJ says farewell

A new era dawns in Destiny 2.

A new entry in Bungie’s “This week at Bungie” blog series went live Thursday afternoon, and it’s a big one for longtime Destiny fans.

The post’s main topic is Beyond Light’s big endgame raid, which will see the community’s best and most fiercely competitive racing for the coveted title of “World First.” This is the honor Bungie bestows on the first six-player team to finish each new high-level raid.

It’s one of the major annual events among Destiny’s elite players.

Beyond Light’s raid will unlock on Saturday, November 21, at 10 a.m. Pacific. For 24 hours, “contest mode” will cap all players off at 20 power levels below each encounter, and seasonal “artifact power” bonuses will be disabled.

Players hoping to compete for World First should aim for 1,230 power, in order to hit the power cap for all the raid’s encounters. Exceeding that power level “will not provide any additional advantage in the final fight,” Bungie says.

Popular Destiny streamer Cory “Gothalion” Michael shared his thoughts on the new raid schedule in a Twitter thread: “I’m not mega jazzed about this date. I know a lot of people are, but it being so close to Spider-Man and Cyberpunk is a super bummer.”

He added, “Though I am super happy they gave us our power goal. Perhaps hitting that early in week two will be possible, and leave a couple days to enjoy Cyberpunk before raid day.”

Cyberpunk 2077, the most anticipated video-game release of the year, launches on November 19. That doesn’t leave hardcore Destiny players a ton of time to invest in Beyond Light before checking out what Night City has to offer.

The blog post concludes with the announcement that Bungie’s communications director, David “DeeJ” Dague, is leaving the company after nine years. He’s been there since November 2011, about a year after the launch of Halo: Reach.

“My last day at Bungie will be November 6, 2020, thus closing out a full nine years in the service of the player. It has truly been an honor. I’ll never forget having the chance to see this community come together and create its own movement. The next destination on my professional journey lies down another path, but I’ll always enjoy retracing the steps we’ve taken together,” DeeJ writes in his farewell post.

“Whoever warned that you should never meet your heroes didn’t have the chance to work in a place like this. I’m taking with me a lifetime of incredible memories of Guardians I would have never known otherwise. Destiny will continue to be an amazing game, in part, because of you. The people who play Bungie games together are the pride and joy of this company. It has been my pleasure to keep our community traditions strong during my time up front.”

Destiny 2’s next big expansion, Beyond Light, goes live November 10 on PC, PlayStation 4, Stadia, and Xbox One.

Next-gen versions of the game will launch on December 8.
