5 Things We Want to See in the Live-Action Legend of Zelda Movie

With Nintendo bringing The Legend of Zelda to the big screen, our expectations are running at an all-time high. Adapting one of the biggest franchises in gaming is no small feat, so fans are obviously protective of its legacy. Amazon Prime has struck gold with the Fallout series, and the same goes with Netflix’s Arcane.

Now, Nintendo has a lot to prove, especially after Super Mario’s success. In this piece, I discuss five things I want to see in the upcoming Zelda movie.

Hyrule Castle Reimagined

Hyrule Castle in ruins.

One of the most iconic places in the series.  It’s obvious that we will be seeing this towering structure make its way to the big screen. However, I’m hoping to see Wes Ball’s unique adaptation rather than a copy-pasted version from the games.

Hyrule Castle has always been different with each Zelda entry. Breath of the Wild’s version was a dilapidated castle now crumbling from the inside, whereas Twilight Princess showed us how realistic its size and scope are, including a secret graveyard.

Director Wes Ball already has enough experience dealing with fantastical worlds thanks to his previous films, such as the Maze Runner Trilogy and the latest Planet of the Apes entry.

Koroks

The world in The Legend of Zelda isn’t the same as our own. It’s a massive fantasy world where dragons and fairies roam the land. Seeing either one of these in the film would send the fandom into a collective frenzy.

What I’d love to see from the movie, however, are the Koroks. I want hidden Koroks lurking behind every frame from Link and Zelda’s adventures, or just give a sizeable budget to make Korok Forest a peaceful sanctuary of magic. We might even see the Great Deku Tree if Nintendo is being generous.

Link as a Silent Protagonist?

Link in Tears of the Kingdom

One of the biggest questions is how the film will portray Link's character. He’s always been a silent kid with only his grunts and ‘hi-yahs!’ Maybe the movie could be a buddy adventure with him and Zelda together, and Patricia Summersett’s character will be the one who does all the talking. Link might be just her subservient bodyguard, and that’s pretty hilarious.

Director Wes Ball already has experience with silent characters, as evidenced by Freya Allan’s character Mae in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

Familiar Friends

Zelda, Link and friends.

The Legend of Zelda is a series best known for its characters. We wouldn’t have this fandom if it weren’t for its well-written story for all of Link and Zelda’s friends. Other races, such as the Gerudo and Zora, may be featured in the film, but we might not be able to explore their kingdoms in their entirety due to budget constraints. Unless Nintendo is giving Wes Ball an unlimited check, then we’re really going for an adventure in the film.

Dichen Lachman from Severance will also be in the movie. According to rumors, she will portray Impa, one of Zelda and Link’s closest Sheikah allies. We can already infer that she might be in her prime here, rather than the old woman we know in BotW.

Who is Ganon?

Would love to see Dave Bautista as Ganon

We still have no idea which actor is going to play Ganon, but it’s obvious that Nintendo will find someone worthy for the villain role.

I have been fan-casting Ganon as Dave Bautista since the movie’s announcement, and I haven’t looked back ever since. He seems like the perfect fit with his bulky frame and deep voice. Plus, he’s already had an experience with heavy makeup covering his entire body in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

There’s still plenty more I have in my head, but these five will do for now. The Legend of Zelda movie could be the greatest gaming adaptation ever made, or it could be the biggest fumble in Nintendo history.

Here’s hoping Wes Ball proves the naysayers wrong.
