Should I Wait For the Nintendo Switch Pro? Here's What We Think

Should I wait for the Nintendo Switch Pro? If you're looking to upgrade your console or start your Switch journey, you may be asking yourself this question.

The 'Nintendo Switch Pro' is the rumoured next iteration of the Switch series, following on from the Switch OLED model released recently. Much like the PS5 Pro, it's rumoured but not confirmed - and that goes for the name too.

But, is a potential Pro version of the Switch worth waiting around for? Here's what we think.

How Long Could The Wait For The Nintendo Switch Pro Be?

Well, unfortunately, at the moment it looks like you could be waiting a while for the Switch Pro as there are no official announcements, only speculation and rumours.

Plus, Nintendo only very recently released their OLED model and so a Pro version of the console is likely not going to arrive anytime soon.

A Tweet from Nintendo themselves back in July last year stated...

"We also want to clarify that we just announced that Nintendo Switch(OLED Model) will launch in October, 2021, and have no plans for launching any other model at this time."

While this suggests that at this time there were no plans for an upcoming Pro version of the console, it doesn't completely rule out the possibility in the future.

A recent Tom's Guide article reported that there are even rumours suggesting that Nintendo will skip the Pro model and move straight onto developing the Nintendo Switch 2 instead.

With a Pro model a long way down the road, if it comes at all, it begs the question as to whether the recently released OLED model is worth investing in?

Is The Nintendo Switch OLED Worth It?

The Nintendo Switch OLED was released in October 2021 and is the most significant upgrade to the original console since its initial inception.

Price

The Nintendo Switch OLED model comes in at £309.99 / $349.99.

This is slightly more than the standard Nintendo Switch model which will set you back £259.99 / $299.99, but, is the extra premium worth it?

Specs

When it comes to power, the OLED model offers the same capabilities as the standard console, however, there are some key differences elsewhere.

As you might guess from the name, the OLED model features a new screen, which not only includes OLED technology but it is also bigger than the original.

The Nintendo Switch OLED features a 7-inch display with 720p resolution and 60Hz refresh rate, which should look excellent while playing in handheld mode.

Of course, the new OLED model includes TV docking capabilities, allowing you to project your games on a larger display.

You're also getting slightly more storage with the OLED model, as it features 64GB rather than the base 32GB.

The new model also features a new colourway, available in white as well as the original neon red/neon blue, which we think looks excellent too.

Should I Wait For The Nintendo Switch Pro?

Ultimately, whether or not you should wait for the Nintendo Switch Pro is up to you, but if you want our two cents, we'd say you're better off investing in the OLED model at the moment.

The Nintendo Switch Pro is not yet confirmed and it may never be launched meaning you could be waiting a long time.

Of course, it is likely in the future that Nintendo will release another version of the console whether it be a Pro version or even the Switch 2.

However, this is likely a long way off and the recent OLED model offers some nice upgrades to the standard console and doesn't ask for too much extra when it comes to cost.

Of course, if you already have a Nintendo Switch, paying £309.99 / $349.99 for a new OLED model may not be the most feasible option and so waiting for an announcement of the Pro model or even the Nintendo Switch 2 could be worthwhile.

If that is you, then you could always look to enhance your gaming experience by grabbing yourself any of the best controllers or best headsets for Nintendo Switch.

Or you could even upgrade with one of the best TVs in order to enhance your gaming experience when playing in docked mode.
