A new AR headset from Google, codenamed Project Iris, is reportedly heading our way, and we've got everything you need to know about it, from the rumoured release date to what exactly we could expect to see when it hits shelves.

Let's dive in.

Project Iris Release Date

According to the report via The Verge, Project Iris may be heading our way for 2024 and is in the very early stages of development.

We'll update this section when we hear more.

Project Iris Leaks

As of now, there are only a handful of clues as to what Project Iris may have in store for us, according to the same report.

Predictably, there's somewhat vague and don't give us a whole lot to go on, but we're expecting more details to emerge in the future.

It looks like the hardware could be powered by a custom Google processor and run on Android, however, a recent job listing suggests that there could be another more bespoke operating system in the works, as spotted by 9to5Google.

The report does go into who is seemingly working on the project, which appears to include big names within the VR and AR space, with experience working on a number of high profile projects for the company.

If this is true, then it looks like Project Iris could be in good hands...

Analysis:

The news of Project Iris is certainly exciting and would appear to be a step away from previous, more enterprise AR solutions such as Google Glass.

How tightly this will be weaved into the Metaverse narrative is still yet to be seen, but we'd imagine Google will be looking to integrate any AR headsets into enhancing remote working over gaming, for instance.

Google has some way to go to catch up with Meta's offerings, especially with the hype around Meta Quest 3 and Project Cambria, but what will be interesting is to see something more mainstream from the company this time around.

There's no doubt that the investment in this area will be enormous, even more so if you consider that Meta has invested circa $10 billion into AR and VR, and don't forget that there are rumours of an Apple AR headset too.

What exactly Project Iris look like is still a mystery though. Will we be looking at AR glasses setup or something which is more a headset?

At this stage, we only have the report to go by, but we're on high alert should Google release a response.
