How To Install Mods

Before we get into the best mods for the game, you should know how to install them. Compared to other PC Games, modding this one is quite simple. The first thing you need to do is find the mod that you want to install and download the folder onto your computer. After that, follow these steps to install it into your game:

  • Find your Electronic Arts Folder (usually in Documents).
  • Open it and select "The Sims 4"
  • Select and open "Mods"
  • Copy or extract your downloaded mod file into the "Mods" folder.

The next thing you need to do is load into The Sims 4. When you are at the main screen before starting a new game or loading into an existing one, follow the next few steps:

  • Open up options (usually the three dots in the bottom right of your screen)
  • Select "Game Options"
  • Select "Other"
  • You will then see a screen that looks like this:
  • Make sure that the box next to "Enable Custom Content and Mods" is ticked and green. This makes sure that the game knows to allow any of the downloads.

After doing those steps, your mods or custom content should automatically be installed in the game. The next time you load into The Sims 4 after adding a mod or custom content file to the "Mods" folder, you may be shown this:

The Best Mods

We've chosen some of the best mods we've found for The Sims 4.

Explore Mod

The Explore Mod by KawaiiStacie lets your Sim venture off on their own to explore the big wide world around them. You can send them off to go gambling, go for takeaway or simply go exploring with another Sim. It makes excellent use of the"rabbit hole" buildings within the game (buildings that the Sim can enter but the camera cannot follow them into). When they return from their adventures, the Sim usually has a new buff or has improved their skills through the trip.

Wonderful Whims Mod

It's no secret that your allowing your Sim to form romantic relationships can be tricky and dull after a while. The Wonderful Whims mod by TURBODRIVER on ModTheSims makes the romantic life of your Sim almost as complicated as it can be in real life. The mod adds a lot of small but significant alterations to the game such as details surrounding pregnancy or sims getting bored if their date talks too much.

Meaningful Stories

If you want your Sims to experience their emotions in more depth and for the humanity of each sim to be increased, this is the right mod. The Meaningful Stories Mod lets your Sim experience their emotions in more detail and their moods can be affected by more environmental factors. They can also experience true happiness.

Melanin Mod Pack

The Melanin Pack Mod by xmiramira adds 52 new skin tones to the game and highly improved its diversity. The pack comes with 52 new skin tones, new make up and new blush. Xmiramira has focused on a quality update that improves an area that people have been waiting for EA to do for a while.

Better Build/Buy

The Better Build/Buy Mod from TwistedMexi seriously improves the overall experience of creating your own world in The Sims 4. You can use a cheat to see all of the live edit objects but that leaves them all with odd names and hard to find. This mod has made it easier to view all of these objects and it has made it far easier to search for them in-game.

Playable Pets

Ever wonder what your pet is thinking or what they get up to when you aren't there? Well, now you can know in The Sims 4! The Playable Pets Mod lets you take control of your furry friends within the game (you need to have the Cats and Dogs expansion though). The actual behavioural options of the animals don't change, so a dog cannot suddenly play the piano. However, you can guard the house or bark at your owner.

Height Slider

You can customise a lot of things about your Sim, right down to how visible their freckles are. However, one thing you cannot alter is the height of your Sim. This is where the Height Slider Mod by GODJUL1 on ModTheSims comes in. This mod lets you alter the height of your Sim by dragging their feet in Create-A-Sim. it does make certain interactions between characters look a bit odd but it's worth it to be able to customise your Sim in more detail.

A Literal Gingerbread House

Modding for The Sims 4 can allow you to download fully build and furnished houses that you can live in. All you need to do is put them into the game. The Gingerbread House Mod by plumbobkingdom adds a touch of festive cheer and fun to the game. You cannot eat it, but it 100% looks like a delicious gingerbread house that's full of festive cheer. The building is fully constructed with 3 Bedrooms and 2 Bathrooms. A pre-constructed home can save you hours in-game.

Ultimately, the best mods for The Sims 4 are the ones that will improve your experience with the game and the ones that you get the most joy out of.
