Rocket League: Crates Removed From Game As Psyonix Adopt Fortnite System

Rocket Leagueare removing crates from their game in an effort to "creating the best possible experience" for players that play the vehicular soccer video game. This comes as a sudden change in what has become a staple aspect of Rocket League and so far seems to have been well received from the community.

This comes no doubt as an influence from Epic Games, who recently acquired Psyonix Studios, to follow a model similar to Fortnite. Rocket League's had a great year with the most recent RLCS Season 7 World Championship, a tournament that Team Vitality won, the next major event is Rocket League Summit 1.

Why Are Crates Being Removed From Rocket League?

In a website post, Rocket League stated:

"Here at Psyonix, and Epic Games as a whole, we are dedicated to creating the best possible experience for our players all over the world. In pursuit of that goal, later this year we will remove all paid, randomized Crates from Rocket League, replacing them with a system that shows the exact items you’re buying in advance. This is similar to changes implemented earlier this year by the Fortnite Save the World team.

Rocket Pass Premium, DLC Cars, and Esports Shop items will continue to be offered for direct purchase alongside our new system.

We will share more information, including timelines and roll-out specifics, in the coming months."

The History Of Crates In Rocket League

Crates were first introduced to Rocket League in 2016, this was originally intended to fund the esports prize pools and events. They can be obtained by completing online matches and award a single cosmetic item from a set of options - these creates are tradable. However, they require a key to open them which is obtained by buying them or occassionaly earned as tier rewards in Rocket League's paid Rocket Pass.

With this new change, players can see exactly what they are buying before they purchase. This could be a change as we are seeing more and more scrutiny surrounding loot boxes.
