Pokemon Sword and Shield owners can get special edition starters for free

Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra are coming to Pokemon Sword and Shield in the coming months, but don't forget about your starters.

In fact, you can get special versions of Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble for free. Here's how.

How to get Special Editions of Pokemon Sword and Shield Starters

You'll need Pokemon Home installed on your Switch, and also on your phone - so be sure to grab both before starting the process. They'll also need to be linked to the same Pokemon account.

  1. Transfer a Pokemon from your Sword or Shield game to Pokemon Home on your Switch
  2. On the mobile version, open your Mystery Gifts menu.
  3. Select the Gift Box option, and the option you'd like to claim.
  4. Once you've claimed, the Pokemon will appear in your Pokemon Home Box.

What's so special about these versions?

We're glad you asked. Each of these Pokemon hold a Hidden Ability, which can't be found in the same Pokemon out in the wild.

Grookey gets Grassy Terrain (boosts Grass-type moves by 30%), Scorbunny has Libero (Pokemon changes type to the type of move it uses), and Sobble uses Sniper (moves get stronger if they are critical hits).
