As part of today's Pokemon event, the Pokemon Company confirmed that Mega Evolutions are coming to the game at some point in 2020.

Pokemon Go Mega Evolutions Coming In 2020
The official Pokemon Go Twitter account noted that Mega Evolutions will be found in the wild, suggesting we might not be able to Mega Evolve the monsters we've already caught.
In any case, Niantic is working to "deliver a new take on Mega Evolution that is enhanced by Pokemon Go's unique gameplay" - whatever that means.

When Mega Evolving Pokemon we own, the likelihood is this will only be applicable to certain Pokemon in trainer battles, gym battles and raids.
In the main games, Pokemon could only mega evolve with the correct keystone that corresponds to that Pokemon.
Perhaps they will implement items that can be found at Poke stops or rewarded via research challenges.
