Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan is leaving Blizzard.

Blizzard broke the news in a new Overwatch blog post, and Kaplan confirmed it a short while later on Twitter.

Aaron Keller, assistant director for Overwatch and former associate director for Overwatch 2, will now take over as lead director on Overwatch 2.

Keller and Kaplan joined Blizzard over a decade ago and in addition to bringing Overwatch to life, the two were key members in creating World of Warcraft.

Kaplan hasn’t announced what his next career move will be or what prompted his departure from Blizzard.

In Kaplan’s farewell message, he said:

It was truly the honor of a lifetime to have the opportunity to create worlds and heroes for such a passionate audience. I want to express my deep appreciation to everyone at Blizzard who supported our games, our game teams and our players. But i want to say a special thanks to the wonderful game developers that shared in the journey of creation with me.
Never accept the world as it appears to be. Always dare to see it for what it could be. I hope you do the same.

Keller said Overwatch 2 development proceeds as planned and is “continuing at a good pace,” before promising more and frequent Overwatch 2 updates soon.
